Expeditions were seasonal, typically conducted in winter and spring to avoid lethal summer heat; a Twelfth-Dynasty official's inscription at Serabit el-Khadim describes near-fatal desert conditions during one such mission.


Religious and Economic Significance

Both sites were closely associated with the goddess Hathor, worshipped at Serabit el-Khadim under the title "Lady of Turquoise". The temple there was founded under Senusret I in the Twelfth Dynasty and rebuilt during the New Kingdom, reflecting the integration of mining activity with royal and religious ideology. Extracted turquoise was transported overland to Nile Valley ports (Wadi Maghara's output moved via the port of Markha on the Gulf of Suez) for use in jewelry, amulets, and royal and temple decoration, feeding into broader Egyptian trade networks extending toward the Levant.


Decline

Mining activity diminished toward the end of the New Kingdom due to a combination of resource depletion, shifting trade routes, and broader economic decline, with Serabit el-Khadim's operations tapering off by approximately 1100 BC.

Epigrapher Douglas Petrovich has proposed a more specific reading. In his 2016 study The World's Oldest Alphabet: Hebrew as the Language of the Proto-Consonantal Script, Petrovich argues the Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions were written in an early form of Hebrew rather than generic Canaanite. On this basis he translates Sinai Inscription 112 as naming Manasseh, son of Joseph, as leader of the mining expeditions, and Sinai Inscription 361 as containing the name of Moses. If correct, this would place the turquoise-mining workforce at Serabit el-Khadim under direct Israelite leadership during the sojourn and early oppression period.

This reading remains a minority position, contested even among scholars otherwise sympathetic to a historical Exodus. In a peer-reviewed evaluation published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society ("Facts Matter: The Language of the Earliest Alphabetic Inscriptions"), the Semitic linguist Aren M. Wilson-Wright, then of the University of Zurich, concluded that Petrovich's central linguistic arguments for reading the script as specifically Hebrew do not hold up under scrutiny, and that the identification of individual biblical figures within particular inscriptions is correspondingly unsupported. Most specialists in Egyptology and Northwest Semitic epigraphy continue to classify the inscriptions' underlying language only as Canaanite in the broad sense, without a linguistic basis for narrowing it further to Hebrew.
