Amnon Ben-Tor (born 1939) is an Israeli archaeologist and professor emeritus at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem who directed the renewed excavations at Tel Hazor from 1990 onward, continuing the work begun by Yigael Yadin in the 1950s.
Hazor, identified as the largest Canaanite city in the southern Levant, features prominently in the biblical conquest narrative (Joshua 11:10-13). Ben-Tor's excavations uncovered evidence of a massive destruction by fire in the Late Bronze Age, which he attributes to the Israelite conquest rather than to internal Canaanite conflicts or other external forces. This interpretation places him in direct dialogue with scholars who favor non-military models for Israel's emergence.
Among the most significant finds from Ben-Tor's campaigns are fragments of an Egyptian sphinx bearing the cartouche of a Middle Kingdom pharaoh, cuneiform tablets reflecting Hazor's diplomatic connections, and the ceremonial palace complex in Area M. The deliberate mutilation of Canaanite cult statues in the destruction layer suggests ideologically motivated violence, which Ben-Tor connects to the biblical prohibition against idolatry.
Ben-Tor's work at Hazor has produced one of the most detailed stratigraphic sequences for any Bronze-to-Iron Age site in the region.
