Arnulf Hausleiter is a German archaeologist at the Orient Department of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Berlin and co-director, with the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage, of the Saudi-German Tayma Archaeological Project.
Tayma is an oasis settlement in northwest Saudi Arabia with a long history reaching back into the Bronze Age. Its principal Old Testament-relevant connection is the ten-year residence of the last Babylonian king, Nabonidus (553-543 BC), who relocated his court there for reasons that remain debated — possibly religious (his promotion of the moon god Sin), possibly political (commercial control of north Arabian trade), possibly both. This residence is documented in the Harran Stele of Nabonidus and is the historical background to the 'madness' tradition associated with the king (and partially conflated with Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 in some scholarly readings).
Hausleiter's project has uncovered substantial Bronze Age and Iron Age occupation layers at Tayma along with cuneiform inscriptions confirming Nabonidus's presence and a wider corpus of Aramaic, Thamudic, and Nabataean inscriptions documenting the oasis's role as a long-running node in Arabian trade. The project's open-area excavation, palaeoenvironmental work, and survey programs make it one of the most ambitious archaeological projects in the Arabian peninsula.
Hausleiter has also published widely on Neo-Babylonian and Neo-Assyrian ceramic chronology and on the Babylonian-period Levant.
