Hermann Hilprecht

Hermann Vollrat Hilprecht (1859-1925) was a German-American Assyriologist who held the Clark Research Professorship of Assyriology at the University of Pennsylvania and served as scientific director of season 4 (1898-1900) of the Babylonian Expedition of the University of Pennsylvania to Nippur, with John Henry Haynes continuing as field director on site.

Hilprecht's career was built on the publication of cuneiform texts recovered at Nippur — the religious center of Sumer and home to the temple library of Enlil. His editions in the 'Babylonian Expedition of the University of Pennsylvania, Series A: Cuneiform Texts' established the textual foundation for late-19th- and early-20th-century Sumerian and Babylonian studies. His best-known work for Old Testament study, 'The Earliest Version of the Babylonian Deluge Story' (1910), published a Sumerian flood-narrative tablet from Nippur that became one of the principal comparative texts for Genesis 6-9 in early biblical-archaeology scholarship.

Hilprecht's tenure was marked by one of the most public scandals in early American Assyriology: the 'Peters-Hilprecht Controversy' (1904-1908), in which expedition co-leader John Punnett Peters and others alleged that Hilprecht had misrepresented his role in certain discoveries and had falsified provenance for tablets in his collection. The University of Pennsylvania investigated and largely cleared him, but the controversy ended his expedition role and damaged his reputation. He published his own defense, 'The So-Called Peters-Hilprecht Controversy' (1908).

Hilprecht also produced the synthetic 'Explorations in Bible Lands during the 19th Century' (1903), an influential popular survey that helped shape American public perception of biblical-period Near Eastern archaeology in the early 20th century. His textual editions, despite the controversy, remain foundational for the study of Nippur's tablet corpora.
