McGuire Gibson

McGuire Gibson is an American Mesopotamian archaeologist, Professor Emeritus at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, who directed the Joint Expedition to Nippur from 1972 onward, succeeding Donald McCown (field director of the first four seasons, 1948-1952) and Richard Haines (intermediate seasons). His Nippur seasons were among the longest-running American archaeological campaigns in Iraq before political instability halted fieldwork in the early 1990s.

Gibson's Nippur work recovered substantial new tablet material from the WC residential quarter and continued the tablet-publication series that began under Peters and Hilprecht in the late 19th century. Nippur was the religious center of Sumer — home to the temple of Enlil (the E-kur) — and the tablets recovered under Gibson's directorship contributed to the comparative study of Sumerian literary, legal, and religious traditions that illuminate the cultural background of Genesis 1-11, including parallels to the flood narrative, creation traditions, and early law-code formats.

Gibson also directed a re-examination of Kish in the 1970s, partially overlapping the geographic ground of the earlier Oxford-Field Museum work under Stephen Langdon (1923-1933), and led the Hamrin Basin Salvage Project documenting sites threatened by Iraqi dam construction. His broader fieldwork at Umm al-Hafriyat and other locations across the Iraqi alluvium contributed to the study of Sumerian and Babylonian urbanism.

Gibson's advocacy for the protection of Iraqi archaeological heritage — particularly in the aftermath of the 2003 looting of the Iraq Museum and the destruction of sites during subsequent conflict — has been influential in international heritage-protection efforts. He has served on multiple advisory bodies focused on the recovery of looted antiquities and the preservation of standing remains in the conflict zone.
