About Nicolò Marchetti
Nicolò Marchetti is an Italian archaeologist at the University of Bologna who directs the Turco-Italian Karkemish Archaeological Expedition. The project, launched in 2011, is the first systematic excavation of Karkemish (modern Jerablus) on the Turkish-Syrian border since the British Museum's expeditions of 1911-1920 led by D.G. Hogarth, T.E. Lawrence, and Leonard Woolley.
Karkemish appears repeatedly in the Old Testament (Isaiah 10:9, Jeremiah 46:2, 2 Chronicles 35:20) as a major Neo-Hittite/Aramean city and the site of the decisive 605 BC battle in which Nebuchadnezzar II defeated Pharaoh Necho II — a turning point in the Babylonian rise that frames much of the late-Judahite prophetic context. Marchetti's expedition has uncovered Iron Age public buildings, a Hittite-period temple complex, and inscribed Luwian hieroglyphic monuments that document the political history of the Neo-Hittite kingdom centered on the city.
Marchetti previously co-directed work at Tilmen Höyük (a Bronze Age city in southeastern Turkey) and contributed to multiple Italian missions in Syria and Iraq. The Karkemish project has also pursued an ambitious site-presentation program, opening parts of the excavated city to visitors despite its location on a former minefield along the Turkish-Syrian border.
His publications appear in journals including Origini and the Karkemish series published through Bologna and the Sapienza-Bologna joint outputs.
