Sven Holm-Nielsen was a Danish biblical scholar at the University of Copenhagen who co-directed, with Marie-Louise Buhl, the 1963 Danish Carlsberg Foundation excavation at Shiloh (Khirbet Seilun). The expedition continued earlier Danish work at the site under Hans Kjær (1922, 1926-1932), which had identified Iron Age destruction evidence connected by some scholars to the Philistine assault described in 1 Samuel 4.
Holm-Nielsen's primary scholarly identity was as a Hebrew Bible and Dead Sea Scrolls specialist. His doctoral work and 1960 monograph 'Hodayot: Psalms from Qumran' (Aarhus University Press) was an early and influential English-language study of the Thanksgiving Hymns scroll, contributing to the first generation of Qumran scholarship that integrated the new sectarian texts with biblical Psalms studies.
His dual expertise — biblical philology and field archaeology — made him part of the cohort of mid-20th-century Scandinavian biblical scholars whose contribution to the Albright-era integration of textual and archaeological work has sometimes been underappreciated outside Danish-language scholarship.
