Ze'ev Meshel (1935-2021) was an Israeli archaeologist at Tel Aviv University who excavated the enigmatic site of Kuntillet Ajrud in the northeastern Sinai Peninsula.
Kuntillet Ajrud Excavations
During three short seasons in 1975-1976, Meshel uncovered a remote way station dating to the late 9th or early 8th century BC, which yielded some of the most debated inscriptions in biblical archaeology. The inscriptions, written in early Hebrew and Phoenician script on large storage jars (pithoi) and wall plaster, include blessings invoking "Yahweh of Samaria and his Asherah" and "Yahweh of Teman and his Asherah."
Significance for Israelite Religion
These texts have provoked extensive scholarly debate about the nature of Israelite religion during the monarchic period, providing material evidence for the syncretistic worship practices repeatedly condemned by the prophets (Hosea 4:12-13, 2 Kings 21:7, 2 Kings 23:4-7). The inscriptions are significant for understanding the religious reforms of Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:4) and Josiah (2 Kings 23:4-14), which targeted precisely the kind of worship attested at Kuntillet Ajrud.
