About Zeev Yeivin

Zeev (Ze'ev) Yeivin (1927-2018) was an Israeli archaeologist who served for decades in the Israel Antiquities Authority and its predecessor body, the Israel Department of Antiquities and Museums, including a period as Deputy Director. His career spanned multiple major excavation projects in Israel from the 1950s into the 2000s.

Yeivin's most extensive single project was the excavation of Khirbet Susiya in the southern Hebron Hills, a Late Roman-Byzantine Jewish village with a well-preserved synagogue containing important mosaic floors and Hebrew inscriptions. His work there documented the synagogue's architectural development across multiple phases and contributed substantially to the corpus of Late Antique Jewish village synagogues.

He also participated in or directed work at Beth Shean, Tel Esur, and a number of additional sites across the country, with a particular interest in synagogue architecture and Jewish village life in the post-biblical period. His administrative role in the Antiquities Authority gave him broad influence over the management of Israel's archaeological infrastructure during a formative period.
