Overview
This locus encompasses the grounds east and south of Dormition Abbey on the summit of Mount Zion, particularly the so‑called “Greek Garden” owned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate. It occupies a high plateau immediately outside the Zion Gate sector of the Old City wall and overlies remains from the Second Temple, Byzantine, and later periods.
Archaeological Evidence
Excavations by the DEIAHL (German‑Israeli) project have investigated terrace walls, rock‑cut features, and architectural remains associated with Byzantine monastic activity and earlier phases. Work has revealed burial installations, agricultural installations, and structural remains that help define the extent of Byzantine ecclesiastical complexes on Mount Zion’s summit.
Historical Context
The area lies within the traditional Christian “Mount Zion” cultic landscape, close to Dormition Abbey, the Cenacle, and later monastic institutions. Finds clarify how this part of the hill was transformed into a religious precinct from late antiquity onward.
