Overview
Jamnia, known in Hebrew as Yavne, is a city located in the coastal plain of ancient Israel, approximately 20 miles south of Joppa and near the Mediterranean Sea. Much later, after the destruction of the Second Temple in AD 70, Jamnia, known in Hebrew as Yavneh, became the seat of the rabbinic academy led by Yohanan ben Zakkai and a center of Jewish learning.
