Brent Nagtegaal

Overview

Brent Nagtegaal is assistant managing editor at the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology and host of its podcast Let the Stones Speak. He has worked for many years as a field supervisor on excavations of the Ophel, the area between the City of David and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

Excavation Work

Nagtegaal first joined the excavations of Eilat Mazar as a volunteer in 2006, while a college student, and worked with her until her death in 2021. He supervised Area B of her Ophel excavation in 2012. He is an area supervisor, for Area E, on the 2026 season of the renewed Ophel excavation directed by Yosef Garfinkel of the Hebrew University.

Education and Institutional Context

He is a graduate of Herbert W. Armstrong College in Edmond, Oklahoma, where he has also taught archaeology. The college, which is not accredited, sponsors the Armstrong Institute, and the college is in turn sponsored by the Philadelphia Church of God.

Writing

Most of his published work consists of articles for the Armstrong Institute. With Amir Golani he is preparing the publication of an electrum pendant from the Ophel for the final report on Mazar's excavations there, which has not yet appeared.
