About Nelson Glueck
Nelson Glueck (1900-1971) was an American rabbi and archaeologist who conducted pioneering archaeological surveys of Transjordan (modern Jordan) and the Negev. As president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (1947-1971) and director of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, Glueck combined scholarly rigor with institutional leadership.
Transjordan Surveys
His systematic surface surveys of Transjordan in the 1930s and 1940s mapped hundreds of previously unrecorded ancient sites and established the first comprehensive archaeological framework for the regions of Edom, Moab, Ammon, and Gilead -- territories prominently featured in the Old Testament narratives (Numbers 20-21, Deuteronomy 2-3, Judges 11, 2 Kings 3). Glueck's survey work identified patterns of settlement and abandonment that he correlated with biblical chronology, though some of his specific dating conclusions have been revised by subsequent research.
Excavations
His excavations at Tell el-Kheleifeh near Aqaba, which he identified as Solomon's port of Ezion-Geber (1 Kings 9:26), and at Khirbet et-Tannur in Jordan generated significant debate.
Negev Surveys and Legacy
Glueck also conducted extensive surveys of the Negev, identifying hundreds of sites and contributing to understanding of the Israelite settlement of the southern frontier. His popular book Rivers in the Desert (1959) brought biblical archaeology to a wide audience.
