Overview
Yohanan Aharoni (1919-1976) was an Israeli archaeologist and historical geographer who made foundational contributions to the study of ancient Israel. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Palestine in 1933 and later became Professor of Archaeology at Tel Aviv University.
Tel Arad Excavations
Aharoni is best known for his excavations at Tel Arad in the Negev (1962-1967), where he uncovered a sequence of Iron Age fortresses and, most significantly, an Israelite temple with a holy of holies oriented toward Jerusalem. The Arad temple remains one of the most important discoveries for understanding Israelite worship practices outside Jerusalem during the First Temple period, directly illuminating the centralization reforms described in 2 Kings 18 (Hezekiah) and 2 Kings 23 (Josiah).
Other Excavations
Aharoni also conducted major excavations at Beersheba, where he uncovered a dismantled four-horned altar, and at Ramat Rahel, Lachish, and numerous sites in the Upper Galilee including Hazor.
Biblical Geography
His comprehensive work The Land of the Bible: A Historical Geography (1962) established the standard framework for correlating biblical geography with archaeological evidence and remains influential in the field.
Legacy
Aharoni died prematurely in 1976 before completing the final publication of the Tel Arad excavation results.
