Numeira is a smaller Early Bronze Age archaeological site roughly a mile south of Bab edh-Dhra on the southeastern Dead Sea plain, proposed as the location of biblical Gomorrah.
Archaeological Evidence
Excavated as part of the same Expedition to the Dead Sea Plain project that worked Bab edh-Dhra, Numeira shows a comparable destruction-by-fire layer, though some ceramic evidence suggests its destruction may not be precisely contemporary with Bab edh-Dhra's.
Biblical Connection
Numeira's proximity to and shared destruction pattern with Bab edh-Dhra have led to its pairing as Gomorrah's proposed counterpart to Sodom. This identification carries the same site-identification uncertainty as Bab edh-Dhra's (see Bab edh-Dhra).
